Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® - Step 1
What is it?
The MBTI® is a self-report questionnaire which helps you to identify your unique gifts. Based on Jung’s theory of psychological types, for more than 50 years it has been the most widely used instrument in the world for understanding normal personality differences.
Essentially, it identifies your natural preferences for taking in information, making decisions, and orienting your life. It provides very rich feedback, which you can easily relate to many areas of your life. The MBTI® is often used in

- Self understanding and development
- Career development and exploration
- Team building
- Management and leadership training
- Problem solving
- Relationship counselling
How does it work?
The MBTI® measures your natural preferences in 4 areas or dichotomies, yielding 16 possible Type combinations:
| Where you focus your attention | Extraversion outer world of people and things | OR | Introversion inner world of ideas and experiences | |
| How you take in information | Sensing facts and present reality | OR | INtuition patterns and future possibilities | |
| How you make decisions | Thinking objective logic | OR | Feeling subjective, values based | |
| How you deal with the world | Judging planned, organised, like things settled | OR | Perceiving flexible, spontaneous, keep options open |
Type does not put you in a “box.” Each person is unique. An “ESTJ” is like every other ESTJ, like some other ESTJs, and like no other ESTJ. Type simply gives you a frame of reference for understanding the likely implications of sharing or being opposite on a preference in the four areas it measures.
How is it administered?
- You complete a 93 item questionnaire (“Form M”) available online or in paper format. This typically takes about 30 minutes
- I explain some of the basic theory behind the instrument, enabling you to carry out a self-estimate of your Type. This is an important step to deepen understanding and minimise error
- The questionnaire is scored and the reported Type compared to the self-estimate
- About 70% of the time the Types will match, in which case you read your Type profile in the booklet “Introduction to Type®”. If you agree with at least 80% of the profile this is your “best fit” Type
- If the Types do not match, I help you get to your “best fit” Type by discussing some of the likely reasons behind the differences and helping you to choose between alternative profiles
- You apply your new understanding to your specific objectives. For example, if you are exploring new career directions, you can use Type to understand what roles and activities you are likely to enjoy
