FIRO-B®

What is it?

The FIRO-B® is often used in combination with the MBTI®. It measures three key interpersonal needs, looking at how you typically behave towards others, and how you would like others to behave towards you. lt therefore provides valuable insight into relationship dynamics and how these could be improved.

How does it work?

The FIRO-B® measures your three interpersonal needs of Inclusion, Control and Affection:

Inclusion
Expressed – how much you generally include other people in your life
Wanted – how much contact, attention and recognition you want from others

Control
Expressed – how much influence and responsibility you want
Wanted – how much you want others to lead and influence you

Affection
Expressed – how close and warm you are with others
Wanted – how close and warm you want others to be with you

You receive a score of low, medium or high for each of the expressed and wanted dimensions. You are then given a separate profile for each of the three needs. These profiles describe the likely motivation and behaviour arising from your combined expressed/wanted score. For example, if you are high on expressed control but low on wanted control, you will probably work best in situations where you can be self-sufficient and in control of most things that affect you. An area of possible challenge might be a tendency not to delegate.

How is it administered?
  • You complete the FIRO-B® online or in paper format. This typically takes around 20 minutes
  • We then complete a self estimate to deepen your understanding of the theory and minimise error
  • Reported score and self estimated scores are compared and we agree your “best fit” scores
  • You read your three profiles in the booklet "Introduction to the FIRO-B®"
